Why Your Rolls Royce Phantom Key Fob Isn't Locking Or Unlocking

There's nothing available that rivals the Rolls-Royce Phantom for sheer opulence. It's larger, heavier, and more luxurious than many SUVs.

A malfunctioning keyfob could cause problems in operating your Phantom. Fortunately, there are ways to solve the issue.

Battery Replacement

The key fob is powered by a coin-sized battery. If this battery gets depleted, the remote key will stop working. The most frequent cause for a Rolls-Royce Phantom key fob not locking or unlocking is a dead battery within the key. Key fobs may be inoperable if there is corrosion on the battery terminals as well as the ground connection.

The process of replacing keys is easy. First, make sure that the key is clean and dry. You don't want any moisture into the battery. Push the release button located on the side fob to release the mechanical key. Then using a screwdriver take the old battery off the key fob. Replace it with the new one, making sure the positive (+) side is facing upward. The cover should be snapped into place.

The Phantom key fob comes with rubber seals to stop water from getting to the chip. If the key is submerged for a prolonged time in water like in the ocean or swimming pool the chip could be damaged. A short exposure to splashes of water will be fine, however prolonged immersion in water can cause the circuit board to fail. In this case replacing the battery is the most effective solution.

Water Damage

A key fob may be waterproof but a splash in the pool or in the washing machine can cause problems. The circuit board could be shorted and corrosion or rust can set in faster. In extreme cases the battery could explode or even die.

You can stop this damage by taking the fob out of the water as soon as it is possible. But, you must also replace the battery. Make use of the same type and size of button cell batteries as the original. Before installing the electronic component, clean it using isopropyl or an electronic cleaner.

After replacing the battery, turn your Phantom on and press each button. If none works, you'll need to take it apart and dry it out before it can be used again.

The easiest way to do this is to put the fob in the container of a small size filled with rice. The rice will absorb any moisture that might be leaking into the fob. You can also blow dry the circuit board and the fob's insides using the help of a hair dryer or heat gun. Avoid using a micro-wave since it can cause damage to the circuitry of the fob's key. Reassemble the fob once it has dried, and test it.

Fault Diagnosis

It is a traumatic experience to lose your keys. In the ideal case, your keys turn up exactly where you left them (Parent Logic insists that they always turn up in "the last spot you look" and you're not going anywhere near that anyway). However, if your key fob isn't turning on and doesn't respond to any of your commands, it's not so easy.

First, check the coin battery Batteries that are dead cause remote key fobs to fail the majority of the time. A dying battery will begin to show signs of degradation, like the range becoming smaller and smaller until it ceases to function completely. Replace the battery with a brand new one that is the same size, voltage and specification. This is necessary to ensure that your electronics are not damaged.

It is also possible that the chip inside the key fob may have been damaged. This can happen when the key fob is dropped on an uneven surface or in the event that it is exposed water. In this instance, Rolls Royce Phantom Key remove the chip from the key fob and clean it with isopropyl or electronic cleaner.

It is also possible that your Phantom's receiver has developed a problem. This could be caused by many reasons, including signal interference or a dead 12 volt battery, or an unpaired key that needs changing the program.

Reprogramming

A Rolls Royce Phantom key fob that stops working abruptly could be a sign of a problem with the receiver module, which is the tiny unit located in the boot that receives radio frequency signals from your remote key fobs. If the key fob stops working after you dropped it on the floor, or if one of the keys stops responding to your commands, it may be time to contact an auto locksmith for reprogramming.

Rubber seals on the key fob block water from damaging electronic chips. However, prolonged exposure to water may damage these seals. Submerging the key into the bath or pool can cause water damage, whereas dropping it into ocean water at the beach can be more damaging due to the highly conductive nature of saltwater.

If your Phantom key fob has suffered water damage, you can still reprogramme it by following these steps:

Close all doors except the driver's. Once you've done that, take the car into the garage. Insert your car's keys into the ignition and turn on the "ON" switch. Some models will sound a chime as soon as you enter program mode. Press and hold the "UNLOCK", "PANIC" and "PANIC" buttons for a few seconds before release. Your car will then chime to confirm that you're in program mode and that your key fob is successfully paired with your vehicle.
