The democratic system in South Korea is susceptible to populist impulses. It is still healthier than we had hoped for.

The country is looking for a new way of developing. The Confucian culture, which emphasizes respect for ancestors and as and gender-specific family relationships, continues to be influential in the society. However, there are signs that a secular culture is emerging.

Origins

In the early days, the ancestors to modern Koreans were capable of survival through hunting and gathering wild foods. Gojoseon was a state of hierarchy where the monarch and senior officials were from the aristocracy of the land, while the majority of the population was peasants. The state collected taxes from these people and sometimes even forced them to join the army or to build fortifications.

At the end of the period, the state of Baekje was established by Onjo who was a prince of Goguryeo and the son of Jumong who was the founder of Goguryeo. The new kingdom grew into the southwest region of the peninsula, and was at war against the Goguryeo commanderies and China's in the region. Baekje accepted Confucian ideas in its state beliefs system in 1390 CE and made the male-centered concept of filiopiety into a doctrine. Development in Korea

Of those who voted, 41% said that there was not enough evidence from science to support the theory; 39% said the theory contradicted their religion and 17% claimed it was difficult to understand. This level of disbelief approaches that of the United States, where a similar number of people are not convinced that humans evolved from earlier species of life.

In the past of the anti-evolutionist movement in Korea was focused on educating college students and bringing them to Christ. A significant rise in the interest in creation science occurred in 1980, with the inauguration of a four-day seminar during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul that included Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the keynote speakers. The event was attended by a large number of church leaders and scientists.

The event's success resulted in the formation of the Korea Association of Creation Research on January 31st of 1980. The meeting was covered extensively in national newspapers including The Korea Times, Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.

KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter called CREATION, where it reported on its activities and also published articles on the scientific evidence supporting creationism. It also translated film strips and slides from ICR and also some books on creationism that were already published outside of Korea. KACR members taught throughout the nation in universities and churches.

One example of an KACR success story was at the KAIST university in Seoul. There, there were enough students fascinated by the concept of creationism that they raised enough money and support to put up a small museum on campus showing creationist models of fossils and other exhibits.

Founded by Onjo, prince of Goguryeo and the third son of Jumong, Baekje was established in the middle of the Hangang River, those from Buyeo and other areas, and immigrants from northern China. Baekje, an important regional power in the 4th century extended its territory to Mahan in north and Jeollanam-do south. Consequently, it came into frequent battle with Goguryeo and the Chinese commanderies along the border.

The fall of Silla in the late 8th and early 9th centuries saw powerful local factions to emerge. Gungye was a nobleman from Later Baekje who established a kingdom in Songak with Songak as its capital. He ruled a portion of today's Jeolla province and Chungcheong. Then, he moved the capital to Wansanju. He was an adversary to Goguryeo.

His rule was however only for a short time. Wang Geon, a powerful local leader who defeated Gungye in 935 and unified Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla Later, he incorporated Baekje into Goryeo without a fight as his successor. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened the centrally-run system. This marked the end of the Three Kingdoms period. From then on, the Korean peninsula was under the control of the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually became powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
